The Centre has completed over half the proposed capital expenditure of Rs 10 lakh crore with railways and roads - the two main pillars for the higher public spending - leading the charge, having crossed 60% of the annual target. Government officials, however, said that they are unlikely to raise the target for the current year. Having completed a large part of the pre-Budget consultations, the Centre is confident of meeting the fiscal deficit target for the current financial year with revenues looking comfortable, including excise, where an immediate cut for fuel is not on the horizon.
