Man fires at Sukhbir Singh Badal in Amritsar, Shiromani Akali Dal leader escapes unhurt
The assailant, identified as Narain Singh Chaura, is said to be a former member of the now-inactive Khalistan Liberation Army.
A man opened fire at Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Punjab’s Amritsar on Wednesday, PTI reported.
The former Punjab deputy chief minister was not hurt in the firing.
A video showed the man approaching Badal, who was sitting at the entrance, and firing gunshots at him.
The assailant, identified as Narain Singh Chaura, was overpowered by a bystander before being taken into custody, reported The Indian Express. Chaura, said to be a former member of the now-inactive Khalistan Liberation Army, managed to fire a shot, but the bullet did not hit Badal, who has Z+ security.

Harpal Singh, additional deputy commissioner of police for Amritsar Rural, said: “We had deployed security nearby. During this time, an individual attempted to create a disturbance but was unsuccessful. The accused has been taken into custody. Only after interrogation will we know the motive behind his actions.”
